Why do we Home School?
...And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house.
Deuteronomy 6:6-7a
What an AWESOME responsibility God has given to us as parents, to teach and train His children. Psalm 127:3 says, "Children are a gift of God, a heritage of the Lord. Therefore, we are accountable to God for molding, shaping and preparing them for a life of service to Him and their fellow man.
It is our desire as parents and teacher's of God's Word to teach our children Christian character that can only come from God's Great mercy. We stop to ask ourselves as parents, "Would my children learn Godly morals and behaviors through the public school system?"
Psalm 78:5-8 God gave his Law to Jacob's descendants, the people of Israel. He told our ancestors to teach their children, so that each new generation would know his Law and tell it to the next. Then they would trust God and obey his teachings, without forgetting anything God had done. They would be different from their ancestors, who were stubborn, rebellious, and unfaithful to God.
Whenever I felt doubt about my qualification as an educator, I reminded myself, God has given me everything I need for life and godliness through my knowledge of Him who called me by His own glory and goodness. Everything I need can be found through prayer and His Word...
II PETER 1:3-4, We have everything we need to live a life that pleases God. It was given to us by God's own power, when we learned that he had invited us to share in His wonderful goodness. God made great and marvelous promises, so that his nature would become part of us. Then we can escape our evil desires and the corrupt influences of this world.
II Timothy 3:16-17 We believe that ALL scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, so that the man of God may be equipped for every good work.
Our home school adventure began in February 1996 to provide our children with Christ like spiritual character and development and for the social and academic welfare of our children. We provide the following for our students:
*An atmosphere where God is number one
*Unity and closeness as a family
*Confidence and independent thinking
*No peer pressure to conform to
*Time to explore new interest
*Flexibility to accommodate work schedules
*Individual attention to meet child's needs
*Parents in control over false teachings
*Parents in control over negative peer pressure
*Train children to Love the Lord
We the teachers, Bob and Shari Scheffler, have purposed that all teaching and training is in obedience to God's Word and led by consistent prayer and trust in the Lord. We reinforce Christian character in order to live a life pleasing to the Lord. Children are fascinated with life and with a joy to learn. Home education preserves this enthusiasm. We nurture personal growth and development. Our ultimate goal in life is to have a heart for the Lord. The Bible commands us in Proverbs 22:6, "Train up a child in the way he should go." If I obey him he promises that, "when they are old they will not depart from him". As parents and teachers we can do this by:
1.DEDICATION: Dedicate our children to the Lord. The children belong exclusively to God. The parents responsibility is stewardship.
2.INSTRUCTION: The HOME is to be a Divine school in which the Father is to be the teacher under Christ. We instruct our children to learn everything essential in pleasing the Lord.
3.MOTIVATION: Create a desire within my children to do what God wants them to do.
In 1996 the journey began...I never considered Home Schooling until after my fourth child was born. I never considered myself as a very patient or consistent person. I didn't feel I had the "qualifications" of a great Home Educator. However I have always considered motherhood to be the BEST ministry God has blessed me with. I also LOVE being with my children watching them grow and learn, but was that enough??? All it takes is a willing, obedient and teachable heart. Okay...but what an AWESOME responsibility to teach and train God's kids.
When I started realizing my oldest son was getting close to school age I would have to face the fact of sending him off to public school. The thought of someone else inflicting their life standards and morals on my kids was hard to accept. what about quenching their inquisitive nature? Would this be stifled? One word that kept penetrating my mind was, "PURITY" I didn't want my son to loose his innocence. I didn't want his to loose his desire to learn. I didn't want his mind being polluted with the things of the world. I couldn't accept someone else having him 6-8 hours a day molding him into their standards of what they think he should be. Children grow up all to quickly. I want to absorb every moment with them. I want to be there when they write their name for the first time. When they learn how to read I want it to be from books they enjoy. When they have questions about life I want them to have God's truth instilled in their hearts. Thinking about all this made me realize I was not ready to let go of my kids. I love being around them watching them grow and learn. They add so much joy and happiness to my days...why would I want to send that joy and happiness away? With all that I decided to talk to my husband about Home Schooling. He wasn't opposed to it, but he did have doubts socially and academically. Since most of the pressure and responsibilities would fall on me, would I be able to handle the demands of motherhood and educating the kids? Even if God was calling me to Home School, I knew without my husbands support I could not endure this adventure. Therefore I began praying and seeking God's wisdom and direction. The first thing I did was make some phone calls. The first one was to the local school district to register my son for kindergarten entrance. The normal registration secretary was not available, so they told me to call back...How ironic...that was my sign from God, telling me not to enter my son into the public school system.
The next phone call I made was to a friend in Colorado, a home schooling mother of four. I asked her 101 questions about home schooling. She sent me, "The Right Choice, Home Schooling" by Chris Klicka and "The Successful Home School Family Handbook" by Dr. Raymond and Dorothy Moore. I proceeded to read these book and became totally convinced I was really hearing from the Lord and if I didn't Home School I would be disobeying the Lord. So I began doing everything I could to educate myself in the area of home schooling.
Then the Lord started putting various people in my path. One was our babysitter. I was so impressed with her Godly character I knew there was something different about her...she was being home schooled. One family at our church with two obedient, talented well educated children turned out to be home schooled, My daughter's dance teacher took her children out of public school to home school...the more I researched the more convinced I was. The Lord kept opening doors and putting people in my path to help show me where to go and what to do next. Before I knew it a few other families at church wanted to start home schooling. We got together with the experienced Home Educators for a meeting to educate us more on the Law and How to begin home schooling. God is so faithful when we are obedient to him. He directs our footsteps and equips us with the necessary information in order to fulfill the call he has placed on our lives. If we choose to obey he will prepare us for any task he puts before us...
...the little boy who began the Home School journey with me twenty years ago graduated in 2009. His purity has been preserved, his desire to learn exploded. Our class grew from one student to 10. As of 2017 we will have five full-time students and 5 successful home school graduates. Hard to believe the journey is half over, but God continues to work in and through us.  He's still working on me.
I am thankful for the First Amendment of the Constitution that guarantees the Home School the right to freely exercise religious beliefs and the 14th Amendment that guarantees the right of the parent to teach their children. That right includes any US citizen to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
